Defocus [Lightroom Preset]

Our digital files often seem too sharp, especially if you like to emulate film. If you want to take that digital edge off, this tool is here to help you deal with that.

Why Soften Your Images?

  • It will help you get more realistic grain by eliminating details that are smaller than the grain
  • You can use it to get a dreamy vibe
  • Reducing sharpness can also help you cover up image artefacts that are coming from a small sensor
  • It will help you mitigate that "too digital" look from high-resolution sensors and add a more organic, film-like softness
  • You can use this preset as a building block and refine the mask afterwards to simulate the sharpness dropoff of vintage lenses

How is it working

The tool is covering the entire image with a mask that has its sharpness set to -100. This way, you can use the preset amount slider after you have applied it to tone it down. And since we set it to -100 the the percentage you set it to is equal to the amount of sharpness reduction we want to apply

📌 Non-destructive – Reversible anytime!

How to use

  1. Apply the Defocus preset (one-click effect)
  2. Adjust intensity with the Amount slider (0-100%). -- The amount you set for your preset is equal to the number of points of sharpness that you want to reduce

WARNING: Your Lightroom Version has to be somewhat recent.

The Lightroom Border presets won't work with versions of Lightroom that do not have a sharpness adjustment inside their masks panel.

LICENSE:

Purchase of these Lightroom presets and Camera profiles grants the buyer a personal, non-transferable, and non-exclusive license to use the presets. This license strictly prohibits resale, redistribution, or sharing of the presets in their original or any modified form, whether for commercial or non-commercial purposes.

INSTALLATION:

Copy the .xmp files to the specific folder:

  • Windows: C:Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
  • macOS: User Library>Application Support>Adobe>CameraRaw> Settings

Here you can make as many subfolders and organize the files however you see fit, as Lightroom won't care, and it will load everything.
